Message from the Director

Info Locust Street

Stepping into the role of interim executive director at Locust Street Art, I am filled with gratitude, excitement, and a deep sense of purpose. My art journey began with my grandma, who would draw, paint, and craft with me. She once told me, "If you said you were going to swim across the ocean, I would believe you. I think you can do anything!" That unwavering belief stayed with me and became a source of confidence in my artistic journey. My mother, equally supportive, ran a music store, and I often joined her at work when I wasn’t in school. Next door was a magic shop owned by an art teacher, and I would create collages and drawings to show him. In return, he'd gift me whimsical trinkets like clown noses or rubber chickens. Those small moments of magic fueled a love for art that only grew stronger over time.

Throughout my life, I have been surrounded by people who believed in me and encouraged my passion for art, and I recognize the great impact of their support. Today, I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of an organization that provides those same opportunities to children and adults of all ages, from every financial and ethnic background. It’s a privilege to work in a space where art is not only taught but celebrated at every level. At Locust Street, anyone can be an artist and be honored and loved, whether their goal is to draw cartoons on the weekends, become a professional photographer, use art as a means of healing and self-expression or any other goal.

I am passionate about continuing the legacy of Locust Street Art and committed to fostering an environment where creativity flourishes and everyone has the chance to experience the magic of art. Thank you for trusting me with this role—I am excited for the journey ahead.

With Gratitude, Emma Brittain-Hardy
