In a world that seems to get increasingly complicated every day, it’s more important than ever to encourage your child to develop their critical thinking skills, as well as their patience and their attention span. At Locust Street Art, there’s no better place to do this than in our clay class. Free of charge, your child can learn to sculpt while also developing capacities that they will be able to draw on for the rest of their life.
Our clay class will introduce your child to an exciting multi-step process that helps to build patience, attention to detail and dedication.
First, your child will learn the fundamentals of working with clay, generating an idea that is both creative and structurally sound and then sculpting the clay to make their vision a reality. Incorporating both hand-building techniques and various tools, your child will have the resources to create whatever they like while also building a broad foundation of knowledge that touches on the essentials of working with clay. Once they finish sculpting, we’ll fire their creation in our on-site kiln so that it can dry and harden. Then, they’ll have the opportunity to glaze and decorate, resulting in a beautiful and unique piece of art that is built to last. By learning and mastering this multi-step, multi-session process, your child will develop a sense of pride that can only come from hard work and dedication. There’s no more rewarding feeling than seeing the piece of art that you’ve been working on for weeks finally come out of the kiln, finished just as you’ve envisioned.
As with most of the free art classes at Locust Street Art, we’ll provide the materials so that your child can learn ceramics. Instruction is individually based, meaning that our students are always encouraged to generate their own ideas and work at their own pace to make them a reality. Our students can come as often as they like, though clay students are especially encouraged to come often, as the process takes several sessions to complete. If you’re looking for a fantastic and free program for your child that develops critical artistic and personal skills, then our clay class may be perfect for you.
